List of vaccines given in NZ
A list of vaccines available in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Rotavirus vaccine
Given to babies for free when they are 6 weeks and 3 months old.
Diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, hep B, and Hib
This vaccination is free for babies at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 5 months.
Pneumococcal vaccine
The pneumococcal vaccine is free for all children under 5.
Meningococcal vaccines
The meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine is free for all tamariki under 5 years old.
Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine
The MMR vaccine is free for all children in NZ.
Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine
Your child can get a free booster vaccination for Hib disease when they’re 15 months old.
Chickenpox (varicella)
Your child can get a free chickenpox vaccination when they’re 15 months old. It’s also free for 11 year olds who have not been vaccinated already or if they have not had a confirmed chickenpox infection.
Diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, and polio vaccine
A single-dose booster vaccination is for children at age 4.
Flu (influenza) vaccine
It’s recommended all tamariki from 6 months old get flu vaccination every year. In 2023, it’s free for tamariki aged 6 months to 12 years old.
COVID-19 vaccines
Recommended for everyone aged 5 and over. It’s also available to tamariki from 6 months who are at greater risk of severe illness if they were to get COVID-19.
HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine
Free for ages 9 to 26. It’s provided through most schools in Year 7 or Year 8.
Tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough vaccine (Boostrix)
Offered to children for free from when they are 11 years old. It’s available through some schools for students in Year 7.
Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine
For people over 18 years old, the MMR vaccine is free if you’re a resident, or eligible for free healthcare in New Zealand.
Flu (influenza) vaccine
Free for adults at high risk and if you’re pregnant.
Meningococcal vaccines
Rangatahi aged 13 to 25 years who are entering into, or in their first year of certain close-living situations, can get free meningococcal B, and meningococcal A, C, W, and Y vaccines.
Tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough vaccine (Boostrix)
Free for adults at 45 and 65 years old, and if you’re pregnant.
Shingles vaccine
Recommended for anyone aged 50 and over. It’s free for the 12 months after your 65th birthday.
HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine
HPV immunisation is free for ages 9 to 26.
COVID-19 vaccines
The COVID-19 vaccine is free and recommended for everyone aged 5 and over.
Chickenpox (varicella) vaccine
If you’re planning a pregnancy and are not able to find out if you’ve had chickenpox, or if you haven’t been vaccinated, it’s strongly recommended you get a chickenpox vaccine before becoming pregnant.
Tuberculosis (TB) vaccine
The TB vaccine is free for children under 5 years of age who have a higher risk of catching TB.
Hepatitis A (hep A) vaccine
If you’re planning to travel, check whether hep A immunisation is advised. Immunisation may also be recommended for certain tamariki at high risk.
Meningococcal vaccines
Additional meningococcal vaccines and doses may be available and free for children and adults at high risk of disease due to medical conditions.
