Monday 29 May to Sunday 4 June is Aotearoa Immunisation Week. This is a great time to make sure everyone in your whānau is up to date with their vaccinations.

What is Aotearoa Immunisation Week

This week:

there are pop-up vaccination events across the motu
some vaccination sites have longer opening hours
is a great time to prepare for winter

Boost your whānau immunity this winter

Nasty bugs and diseases spread much more easily during winter as we spend more time inside in close contact with each other.

We need higher rates of immunisation to stop our whānau and communities from getting sick.

Aotearoa Immunisation Week is a great time to book vaccinations with your doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider.

Flu

We recommend everyone over 6 months old gets immunised against flu every year.

This year, the flu vaccine is free for:

all children under 13 years old
people aged 65 and over
pregnant people
Māori and Pacific people over 65.

The flu virus changes often which is why we need a flu vaccine every year. Getting a flu vaccine at the start of winter gives the best protection.

COVID-19

Measles

This year we’ve already had cases of measles reach our shores. We need at least 95% of people living in New Zealand to be immunised to prevent an outbreak of measles.

Many adults and rangatahi (young people) born between 1989 and 2004 in New Zealand were not vaccinated against measles.

The MMR vaccine is free for everyone under 18 years old, and all adults born after 1969 if they’re eligible for free NZ healthcare.

Whooping cough

Whooping cough is not under control in New Zealand, and when outbreaks occur, it can be very serious – especially for babies under 12 months old.

It's important to have the whooping cough booster when you’re pregnant to protect your baby until they can have their first vaccines at age 6 weeks. It’s most effective when given from 16 to 26 weeks of pregnancy, and is available and free from 13 weeks of every pregnancy.

People who live or work with babies should also get boosted against whooping cough.

Meningococcal

Pēpi and tamariki

The MenB vaccine was added to the National Immunisation Schedule for pēpi (babies) on 1 March 2023.

All tamariki under 5 years old can catch up for free.

Rangatahi (young people) living in uni halls and boarding schools

Rangatahi aged 13 to 25 years living in uni halls and boarding schools can get a free meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine. If it's your first year you can also get the meningococcal A, C, W, and Y (MenACWY) vaccine.

Childhood immunisations

During the COVID-19 pandemic, childhood immunisation rates plummeted around the world. This has led to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases – including measles.

The National Immunisation Schedule outlines all the vaccines your tamariki needs to be protected.

To check if your tamariki have had all their childhood vaccinations call your doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider and ask what they might need.

How to check what vaccines you might need

If you're not sure what vaccines you may need, you can:

check your Well Child Tamariki Ora My Health Book (previously called Plunket Book), or
phone and talk to your doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider.

If you’re not able to confirm an immunisation was given, your doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider may advise you to play it safe and get immunised anyway. It’s better to be immunised and protected.
